A Journey Begins

With today’s soft launch of Supemeup we take the first step in the proverbial journey of a thousand miles and yet it is merely an additional step in another journey that began much earlier.

That journey had in turn it’s own a first step, a young skinny boy looking at action movies in the 80s/90s a feeling drawn to the larger than life heroes within them, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme chief amongst them; showing him that Superman and He-man physiques could be earned by real men.

I quickly promised my mum that I would ever only seek a Van Damme like body and never want to get as big as Arnie,  agreeing that “too big” was disgusting… and yet could not help but stare with awe at the armour like pecs and pythonesque biceps of “Conan” “Dutch” or “John Matrix”

In my quest for JCVD’s martial arts skills and body he soon joined a Ju-Jitsu club my friends had been attending and encountered for the first time the pain and elation of training.

Fast forward a few years and the quest for strength had led to joining a proper gym and fumbling around with some basic weightlifting.

This newfound interest culminated in the discovery of Ironage , a haven for people passionate about the so called golden era of bodybuilding. Amongst the plethora of articles and pictures of the behemoths of yesteryear my interest in taking control of the architectural destiny of my physique grew along with my muscles. I discovered the many champions that shaped this subculture Steve Reeves, Reg Park, Freddy Ortiz, Sergio Oliva, Franco Columbu, Danny Padilla and Arnold “The Austrian Oak” Schwarzenegger amongst my favourites.

Not long after whilst aimlessly perusing a bookstore I stumbled onto a copy of Flex bodybuilding magazine with an article about Arnold in it. This article was written by non other than the creator of Ironage (and now editor-in-chief of Muscle & Fitness) Shawn Perine. In it Shawn not only disclosed Arnie’s routine in his Mr Olympia days but also painted a picture of training in southern california in the 70s.

I mentally broke my vow to my mother, I no longer thought there was such a thing as too big. It was the final push that turned a slowly growing snowball into the bodybuilding avalanche that has shaped my life; it is still my favourite routine and I constantly go back to it.

An obsessive nature and love of science driven by Asperger’s turned me into a mad scientist tinkering with his monster, only I was both Frankestein and his creature. I tested all kinds of supplements, diets and routines, my Biomedical training allowing me to understand each little tweak, from a different angle activating different muscle fibres to an increase of a nutrient increasing a particular cellular reaction.

A few more years pass and I am on a stage in posing trunks facing hundreds of people, I weight 82kgs at 5% body fat, I am big , I am cut and I am tanned, I am the king.

This personal journey is still ongoing and will never stop, but it fuelled a desire to share what I learned , to help others achieve their goals without first stumbling on the plethora of misinformation in the fitness industry.

Supemeup is the brain child of this desire to link people’s knowledge and only provide targeted effective products to aid them in their own journeys.

Will you take the next step with us?
